Weight Loss Support

Getting help to lose weight

In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, there are different ways to get help if you want to lose weight. The type of help you get depends on the support you need.

Start with online help

You can use free tools online, like the NHS Weight Loss Plan, to help you start losing weight.

More support if you need it

If you need extra help, your GP can refer you to a local programme. These are run by the NHS and local councils. They offer more support to help you lose weight.

Higher levels of help

After trying a programme, you and your GP might think you need more help. You may be able to get this if:

  • your BMI is 35 or higher
  • you have health problems linked to your weight

Your GP surgery can tell you what to do next.

Weight loss injections

Weight loss injections may be offered as part of your support. This depends on your needs and health.

New medicine: Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)

Not available yet

Right now, tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and semaglutide (Wegovy) are not available in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

From 23 June

From 23 June, GPs can start talking to patients about tirzepatide. They will check if it’s right for you. This does not mean it will be given straight away.

Who can get it?

Around 1,000 people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight may qualify. To get it, you must:

  • have a BMI of 40 or higher
  • have 4 or more health conditions, such as:
    • type 2 diabetes
    • high blood pressure
    • heart problems
    • sleep apnoea
    • high cholesterol

When it will be ready

The NHS is setting up the service now. It should be ready in autumn. Please do not contact your GP yet – they can’t help with this until the service starts.

More support in the meantime

Until then, you can still get help from the current weight loss services.

We will update this page when there is more news.
