Travel Vaccinations
You are responsible for preparing for your trip abroad. This includes getting the right travel advice and vaccines.
We run travel clinics where specially trained nurses can help. This is not a free service. Some vaccines are not paid for by the NHS, so you may need to pay for them. We'll tell you the costs during your phone appointment.
What you need to do
You may need vaccinations before your trip. To check this, you must fill out a travel risk form.
- Contact the surgery to ask for the form.
- We will send it to you by text message (SMS).
- Fill it in and send it back as soon as possible.
Once we get your form:
- We will check if you need an appointment.
- If you do, a member of our team will contact you to book one.
What happens at your appointment
You'll speak to a travel nurse on the phone. You'll talk about:
- where you're going
- what you plan to do there
- what vaccines or medicines you might need
This may include advice about tablets to prevent malaria. If you need them, we'll ask you to go to a high street travel clinic.
Vaccines take time to work. Contact us at least 6 to 8 weeks before you travel.
If you have a complex travel plan or are backpacking, contact us as early as you can – several months before your trip is best.
If you contact us with less than 6 weeks to go, we may not have time to help. You may need to go to a private travel clinic instead.
You can find our more travel vaccination advice on the NHS website's travel vaccinations page.
If your school age child has missed vaccinations at school, please contact the South East Immunisation team on 023 8231 8318 or email sais@southernhealth.nhs.uk.
