Important Information for Patients Using Depo-Provera® or Sayana Press®

Recent evidence has identified a very small increased risk of developing a meningioma (a usually non-cancerous tumour arising from the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) in people using medroxyprogesterone acetate injections, including Depo-Provera® and Sayana Press®, particularly following prolonged use over several years. Studies suggest that the risk increases with longer duration of treatment, although the overall risk remains very low.
In response to this evidence, updated guidance from the College of Sexual and Reproductive Health, published on 4 June 2026, advises that patients should be informed of this potential risk when considering or continuing treatment with injectable medroxyprogesterone acetate. Healthcare professionals should review ongoing use regularly and discuss alternative contraceptive options where appropriate.
Medroxyprogesterone acetate should not be used by anyone who has a current meningioma or a history of meningioma. Patients currently using Depo-Provera® or Sayana Press® who have concerns about this information should not stop their contraception without first seeking medical advice, as alternative methods can be discussed and arranged.
Our clinicians will be happy to review your individual circumstances and help you choose the contraceptive method that best meets your needs.
